What is Osteopathy?
Osteopathy is a hands-on approach to healthcare focusing on the body’s structure and how it functions. It uses gentle techniques to assess, diagnose, and treat a wide range of musculoskeletal issues such as joint pain, muscle tension, and postural problems, in order to help restore movement, ease discomfort, and support your body’s natural healing processes.
What to expect from your first appointment?
Your first appointment is a chance for us to get to know you and understand your health goals. We’ll begin with a detailed conversation about your symptoms, medical history, lifestyle, and any concerns you may have. This is followed by an assessment focusing on posture, movement, and areas of tension or discomfort. If appropriate, treatment may include hands-on techniques to ease pain, improve mobility, and support your body’s natural healing. You’re welcome to ask questions at any time, and we’ll always explain what we’re doing and why.
What to wear to an appointment?
In order to assess and treat the site of pain, we may ask you to undress to some extent. If you are uncomfortable dressing down, we suggest you wear loose clothing, leggings or shorts.
How many treatments will I need?
The amount of treatment needed will all depend on the condition, state of health, age, stress etc. We will typically give you an indication as to how many sessions are needed within the 1st or 2nd appointment, and keep treatments to a minimum.
Do I need to see my doctor first?
You do not need to consult your GP. Osteopaths are primary healthcare professionals, who are able to diagnose and order further tests (xray/MRI) if deemed necessary.
Do you treat children?
We treat from the age of 10 upwards at our clinic. Please note that anyone under 16 will need an adult chaperone present at all times during the appointments.
Will treatment hurt?
We will aim to make you as comfortable as possible and will always tell you what to expect. It is normal to feel stiff and sore for a day or so after the initial treatment. Most patients describe this as being similar to post-exercise aches and pains.
